Nusrat Ali’s skin changed for the better after she discovered K-Beauty. Watch to hear about why she’s an advocate for the double cleanse method, what her biggest beauty mistake is, and more!

If you take one look at Nusrat Ali’s colorful Instagram feed, it’s clear that she’s passionate about makeup. From lime green eyeshadow to a full face of cherry blossom-inspired hues, the beauty influencer loves to experiment with color to create a totally original look. But she knows that every good makeup look starts with a good skin care foundation.

She detailed her skin care routine in her How I Soko video, a series where she and a couple of Soko glam staffers talk about their favorite 2019 Soko Glam Best of K-Beauty Awards winners. Of course we had some questions of our own for Nusrat and she was kind enough to answer them as part of our first installment of “Sink-side Confessions”, which you can watch above.

In the video, she explains that she was introduced to Korean beauty about five years ago, when she went through a “skin detox” after using too many harsh products that dehydrated and stripped her skin. “I kind of went overboard with it, and my skin was left very raw and I damaged my skin barrier,” she says in the video above. “Now I have to be more careful when I test out new products and dial it back a little.”

One of the biggest things that has changed her skin for the better is double cleansing – especially when it comes to her acne. “I thought that wearing makeup would break me out, whereas I was just not cleansing properly. Double cleansing really helped to get rid of all the dirt and debris,” she explains. Her go-to product is the Mamonde Petal Spa oil to Foam Cleanser because it’s a two-in-one. Another step of her pre-makeup routine that’s non-negotiable for her is sunscreen (as it should be for everyone, obviously!).

And of course – as a selfie expert – we had to ask Nusrat if she had any tips and tricks on getting that perfect shot. “Lighting, lighting, lighting!” she says. Most might recommend waiting until “golden hour” to engage in any selfie-taking, but Nusrat says that cloudy days are her preferred natural filter. “With golden hour, you kind of get washed out,” she says. “My favorite is cloudy days – your makeup shows through more.”
