- 6 Damaging Hair Habits to Break Now
Looking for a healthy mane? These tips will get you there!Like many other skin care addicts, I spend way too much time looking after my face and way too little time on the hair around it. Every time I approach the hair salon, I’m riddled with fear and guilt because I know my hairdresser will tell me off for not looking after my mop of hair properly. If you’re also a bit lost about hair care, here are some tips for keeping your hair healthy and glossy between hairdressing sessions.1. Don’t straighten your hair while it is wetIf styling your hair while it is dry already causes considerable damages to your strands, doing it while it is wet is even worse. Hair consists of the cuticle, made up of hard overlapping scales, and a soft, spongy inner cortex. This inside cortex soaks up to 1/3 of its own weight of water through the gaps in the cuticle when it’s wet and, as soon as you press your hair with a hot iron (which temperature can get close to 400 degrees, far above the boiling point of water!), all the water trapped inside will blast out through the cuticle explosively, damaging it permanently in the process. Quick translation: Get ready for some serious snagging, split ends, breakage, and brassy color.

- How My Skincare Routine Changed As I Approach My Late 20s
Your skin care routine evolves with every stage of life and you should take notice of how it changes at each stage. Read on to see how this 20-something takes on the challenge of looking her best.Skin care means a lot to me, and if you’re reading this I’m sure it means a lot to you too. The minute I hit my early 20s and began my career as a beauty editor, I became the ultimate skin care fanatic, and boy, am I glad I did. For the first time ever I was experiencing hormonal breakouts, discoloration, and uneven texture, so I had to educate myself and keep things under control. As I’ve learned what works for me and what doesn’t, I’ve also learned that each year something changes, and as I’m approaching my late 20s, I guess I can say everything has changed. I know that change is uncomfortable and the thought of aging can be too, but embracing these shifts with the right products is the way to go. So, as I approach the end of my 20s, I wanted to share some of the most significant changes I’ve made to keep my skin looking and feeling great at all times. Chemical Exfoliation Over Physical Exfoliation
- Sarah Pidgeon, Actor
“I think I have a slight revisionist history about why I wanted to become an actor. Some people in my family say that I’ve been talking about it since I was a little kid. I spent my summers at Interlochen, an incredible arts camp, but I had a moment where I realized I could actually make a career out of it when I saw fellow campers applying to conservatory and arts programs. So when I graduated high school, I went on to study at Carnegie Mellon School of Drama, and after that, I shot The Wilds in New Zealand, and Tiny Beautiful Things in LA. Funny enough, two months after I signed my lease in LA, I got cast as Diana in Stereophonic [in New York]. Stereophonic was the last thing I auditioned for before the world shut down in 2020. That iteration of the play ultimately never went forward, but then in May of last year, I auditioned for it again and got it. Honestly, the whole trajectory of this play was not something I anticipated at all. We first started off Broadway, and my friends would come and ask if it might transfer. I remember saying, ‘Maybe, but doesn’t that take years? Who knows where I’ll be then?’ By the end of our run in December, the producers told us we’d be on Broadway by March. I feel really lucky to be able to do this—and to have been nominated for a Tony for Best Featured Actress in a Play? I couldn’t have predicted that. I was in bed, looking at a text thread with my family, when nominations were announced. I was stunned when I saw my name. Especially to have been nominated in a category next to Juliana Canfield, my castmate who’s changed my life not just as a performer, but as a person. I felt very honored.

Anyone who has ever struggled with persistent breakouts has probably heard from some well-meaning acquaintance that “drinking lots of water!” helped cure their own skin woes. And while helping yourself to a couple of slices of cheesy pizza won’t have you waking up with an oily complexion the very next day, it’s actually true that the foods we eat can directly relate to how our skin looks, not only in the day-to-day but in the long term as well. “For years there were beliefs that certain foods could worsen acne and cause flareups, and now there are many actual studies that have shown a link between diet and acne,” says Kally Papantoniou, a dermatologist in Great Neck, New York. RELATED: From the Outside, In: Benefits of Superfoods in Skin CareWhat are these foods that we should be watching out for and how might they be affecting our skin?Refined carbohydrates and sebum (oil) productionPapantoniou suggests avoiding “foods such as white breads, pastas, white rice and white potatoes.” The reasoning behind this is that these foods have a high glycemic index, which can lead to higher glucose and insulin levels.
